IRM-2 Integrated Racing Machine
This scratch built own design is based upon Jeremy Kemps Challenger described in
his book "Hovercraft - The Constructors Guide", available from the HCGB.
Power is provided by Twister 09 brushless motor controlled by a Hacker Master 40-O-Flight speed controller.
An 8 cell 1850mAh nicad gives the necessary watts to run for approx 6 mins.
Thrust is given by a 10 x 3.5 wooden prop turning at a max revs of 10000.
The skirt is a flow through bag skirt with the air exiting into the plenum via slots along the skirt to base joint.
There are slots all around the machine but most are covered with duct tape as experiments continue.
With the bathtub shape inside the skirt, water ingress is not a problem.
The model is very manouverable and needs a gyro to maintain straight line running.
Weight of the whole machine including batteries is 6.5 lbs (3kgs)
Construction is liteply base with deck made of 1/64 ply - balsa - 1/64 ply sandwich.
The duct rear is two layers of 1/64 ply laminations and the front is carved blue foam.
Photos of build sequence and original motor mount can be seen on page 2
